The Saint Paul Saints are going to have another go at an amateur team this weekend. On Saturday, May 7, 2011 the Saints will play at Cold Spring and take on the Central Minnesota All-stars. Game time will be 3:30 P.M.
Last week’s game against the St. Paul League All-stars was cancelled because of rain and cold. The forecast for this weekend is much better.
Steve Huls, a member of the Cold Spring Springers, worked to select the team—mostly Springers and Sauk Rapids Cyclones players with a few players sprinkled in from Sartell, Cold Spring Rockies, Freeport, Sobieski, Richmond, St. Cloud Ultimate Snappers and even one player from the old timer’s league, Silver Springers, Josh Loesch.
“It really came down to who was available and could play,” said Huls. At this time of year a lot of players are not available and Huls did his best to get players that could compete with a professional team like the Saints. “They (Saints) have four guys on their roster with big league experience,” noted Huls. “If it’s a nice day I think we will have a nice showing,” he continued.
Huls said that they have already sold more than 841 tickets and hope to reach the 1500 mark. They have set up multiple concessions areas and have over 42 volunteers that are working the event. “It is a neat thing for the Saints to do,” said Huls, “It’s good for the whole community.”
They have had a lot of help from area businesses also. Jim Lundeen, owner of Killebrew Root Beer, is a major sponsor of the game. He is bearing the cost of busing the Saints and pre-game and post-game meals for the players. He has also done posters and a lot of the pre-game advertising. Cold Spring Brewing has also purchased numerous tickets and handled the expenses for the game day program. Central Minnesota Umpires has donated the umpire services for the game.
The money raised from the game will go to the Cold Spring Amateur Baseball association which supports amateur, youth and high school baseball. It will also go to upgrades at the ball park that the city can’t handle.
