The Aitkin Steam slipped by the St. Mathias Devils 1-0 on Sunday in Aitkin as Thorin Dunham and Jake McGuire combined on the 6-hit shutout.
The Devils Alex Guggisberg was outstanding as well as he went the distance, allowing just 2 hits to the Steam but took the loss.
The games only run came in the bottom of the 2nd when Aitkin’s Drew Paulbeck reached on an error, then went to 2nd on a ground out. Another groundout moved Paulbeck to 3rd with 2 outs. Noelan Jones then singled to drive in Paulbeck to make it 1-0 after 2 innings.
The Devils did load the bases with 2 outs in the top of the 6th but a grounder back to pitcher Thorin Dunham ended the scoring chance for St. Mathias.
That turned out to be the last good scoring chance for St. Mathias and that 2nd inning run was enough for the Steam to post the 1-0 win.
