Jack Theisen’s 2-run single in the top of the 7th broke a 3-3 tie and helped the Avon Lakers to a 7-4 road win in Buckman on Sunday.
Avon jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st against Billygoats starter Matt Tautges when Caleb Curry walked with 2 outs followed by a Reese Gregory single. Elian Mezquita then drove in Curry with an rbi single to left to make it 1-0.
In the top of the 2nd, Avon put their first 2 runners on base when Matt Tautges hit both Jack Theisen and Carter Holthaus. A Kayden Mork sacrifice bunt put runners at 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. Elliott Burnett then drove in Theisen with a single to to left, making it 2-0.
Buckman got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd when Travis Kahl led off with a single against Avon starter Drew Lieser. Matt Tautges followed that with a double to center, advancing Kahl to 3rd. Lane Girtz drove in Kahl with a ground out to make it 2-1. Lieser then got strikeouts of Noah Boser and Ben Thoma to end the inning.
In the top of the 4th, Avon made it 3-1 when Carter Holthaus singled with 1 out, followed by a Kadyn Mork single that moved Holthaus to 3rd. Caleb Curry then singled with 2 outs to score Holthaus to put Avon up 3-1.
In the bottom of the 6th, Noah Boser singled to right and Matt Kummet singled with 1 out. A single to right by Jack Suska brought home Boser to make it 3-2 and pinch-runner Kyle Winscher moved to 3rd. Max Barclay then tied the game with an rbi single to to left to make it 3-3.
In the top of the 7th, Elian Mezquita singled with 1 out, and Carter Philippi was hit by a Tautges pitch. Cole Wellmann then grounded out to 1st, moving both Mezquita and Philippi up a base. Jack Theisen then came through with a 2-run single to right to bring in both Mezquita and Philippi and give the Lakers at 5-3 lead.
In the top of the 8th, Kayden Mork singled to lead off the inning, followed by a single from Elliott Burnett with Mork going to 3rd on an error. Caleb Curry then doubled to right, driving in Mork and Burnett came in to score on an error on the play to put Avon and 7-3.
In the bottom of the 8th, Buckman put Matt Kummet on base when he was hit by a pitch, followed by an Andrew Rueckert single that moved Kummet to 3rd. A Jack Suska ground out brought home Kummet to make it 7-4, but Elian Mezquita struck out Max Barclay and got Travis Kahl to ground out to shortstop Caleb Curry to end the 8th.
In the bottom of the 9th, Matt Tautges doubled off reliever Reese Gregory, but Lane Girtz popped out to 2nd, Noah Boser lined out to right fielder Carter Philippi and Ben Thoma flew out to center to end the ball game with a 7-4 Avon win.
