The Avon Lakers bounced last season’s District 4B Champs, the St. Stephen Steves, out of this year’s Tournament with a one-sided 11-0 win in 7 innings on Friday night in Avon. WP Elian Mezquita and reliever Drew Lieser combined to throw a 1-hit shutout at the Steves while the Lakers offense got jump-started by 1st inning Home Run blasts from Caleb Curry and Nolan Dumonceaux.
The Steves picked up their only hit of the game when Brody Sabin led off the top of the 1st with a single off Lakers starter Elian Mezquita. After a walk, Mezquita got Mitch Delfino to ground into a double play and then he fanned Jack Greenlun to leave Sabin stranded at 3rd.
In the bottom of the 1st, Ryan Janzen led off by getting hit by a Jack Greenlun pitch, then after a strikeoout, Caleb Curry launched a 2-run Homer to left to put Avon up 2-0. 2 pitches later, Nolan Dumonceaux made it 3-0 with a solo shot of his own.
In the bottom of the 2nd, Avon loaded the bases on an error, a sacrifice bunt and walks to Kadyn Mork and Ryan Janzen. After Mork was thrown out tryting to steal home, Elliott Burnett singled to load the bases again, and then Caleb Curry walked to force in Carter Holthaus to make it 4-0 after 2 innings.
In the bottom of the 4th, Avon struck again on a 2-run single fron Nolan Dumonceaux to make it 6-0 after 4 innings.
In the bottom of the 5th, the Lakers kept going after it. Kadyn Mork doubled with 1 out, followed by a walk to Travis Cariveau. Carter Holthaus then ripped an rbi double to left to score Mork and make it 7-0. Ryan Janzen followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Cariveau and it was 8-0 after 5 innings.
In the bottom of the 6th, Caleb Curry opened the inning with a single off new pitcher Nick Krippner. After a Curry steal of 2nd, Nolan Dumonceaux walked, then Reese Gregory singled to drive in Curry and make it 9-0. Henry Schloe made it 10-0 with a sacrifice fly and Avon tacked on 1 more run in the 6th when Travis Cariveau singled to drive in pinch-runner Griffin Roemeling to make it 11-0.
Drew Leiser then came out and issued a lead-off walk to Jack Greenlun, but then ended the game with a groundout and a pair of strikeouts to clinch Avon’s 11-0 win in 7 innings. The Steves managed just 3 baserunners after the 1st inning, and those all came on walks.
With the loss, the St. Stephen Steves season comes to a close, while Avon will return to action again next Friday night at 6:00 pm against the loser of Sunday’s game between Nisswa and Sobieski.
