The Freeport Black Sox picked up their first Win of the Victory League season on Saturday, breaking a 3-3 tie at Clear Lake with a run in the 8th and another in the 9th and then hold on as the Lakers made it 5-4 in the bottom of the 9th and had the tying run thrown out at the plate.
Clear Lake scored in the bottom of the 1st against Freeport starter Kaden Toutges, getting a lead-off single from Nick Berglund, who was then balked to 2nd. Cade Simones then flew out to shallow center, with Berglund holding at 2nd. A Caleb Leintz single moved Berglund over to 3rd with 1 out. Matt Korte then singled to right to score Berglund and make it 1-0. Toutges got out of the inning with a ground out and a fly out.
After both teams went down in order in the 2nd inning, the Black Sox came through with 3 runs in the top of the 3rd. It all started with 2 outs when Trevor Sawyer was hit by a pitch by Lakers starter Jack Philipp. Nate Mettenburg then singled to move Sawyer to 3rd. Mason Toutges then tied the game with an rbi single to right as Trevor Sawyer scored to make it 1-1. Matt Johnson then walked on 4 pitches to load the bases. Addi Dobowey gave Freeport a 3-1 lead with a 2-run single to center, plating both Mettenburg and Toutges. Jackson Philipp then got a fly out to Nick Berglund in center to end the inning.
It stayed 3-1 until the bottom of the 6th when Matt Korte led off the inning with a solo Homer for Clear Lake to make it 3-2. Matthew Primus reached base on a 1-out error, followed by a walk to Quentin Dukowitz. After a line out to left for the 2nd out, an rbi double from Jordan Golombiecki drove in Primus to tie the game at 3-3. Jackson Philipp then got an inning-ending ground out to 1st to strand runners at 2nd and 3rd as the game moved to the 7th all tied up at 3-3.
After a quick 7th inning, Matt Johnson singled with 1 out in the top of the 8th and stole 2nd for the Black Sox. Jackson Philipp got a strikeout for the 2nd out. Carter Neuenschwander’s ground ball was misplayed for an error, allowing Johnson to score and put Freeport back in front 4-3.
In the bottom of the 8th, Kaden Toutges rolled right along on the mound for Freeport, getting 3 outs on just 7 pitches to send the game to the 9th with the Black Sox up a run.
Freeport put together another 2-out scoring rally in the top of the 9th as Trevor Sawyer singled with 2 outs, followed by another single from Nate Mettenburg. Mason Toutges came through with an rbi double to center as Sawyer scored to make it 5-3. Jackson Philipp got Matt Johnson to fly out center to end the inning as Clear Lake trailed 5-3 going to the bottom of the 9th.
The Lakers got their lead-off man on when Alex Schroeder reached on an error. Jordan Golombiecki then walked and Nick Berglund singled and the Lakers had the bases loaded with no outs. Kaden Toutges got the 1st out of the inning when Cade Simones lined out to 1st baseman Ben Mettenburg. Caleb Leintz then ripped a single to left, scoring Schroeder to make it 5-4, but Freeport left fielder Trevor Sawyer threw out Golombiecki at the plate as he tried to score the tying run. Clear Lake now had Berglund at 3rd and Leintz at 2nd with 2 outs and trialing 5-4. That brought up Matt Korte, who already had an rbi single and a solo Homer in the game. With 1st base open, Freeport opted to pitch to Korte anyways and Kaden Tourges got him to ground out to 1st baseman Ben Mettenburg to end the game.
