The St. Mathias Devils got a solo Home Run from Byce Flanagan in the bottom of the 8th to break a 4-4 tie with the Pierz Bulldogs and then Flanagan struck out the side in the top of the 9th to finish off his Complete Game 5-4 victory.
The Pierz Bulldogs scored in the top of the 1st when Cooper Grashorn and Max Barclay singled with 1 out. Grashorn then scored on an error to give the Bulldogs the 1-0 lead.
The Devils tied it up in the bottom of the 2nd when Bryce Flanagan walked against Bulldogs starter Reese Young. Alex Guggisberg then hit into a fielders choice and went to 2nd on a passed ball. Guggisberg scored on an rbi single by Tydan Guida to make it 1-1 after 2 innings.
In the top of the 3rd, Max Barclay drove in Reese Young with an rbi single and Pierz was back in front 2-1.
In the bottom of the 3rd, Hunter Wicklund doubled with 1 out, then scored on a William Carlson 2-out rbi single to tie the game at 2-2 after 3 innings.
The Devils grabbed a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the 4th on an rbi single from Connor Knettel and another run scored on a Bulldogs error.
In the top of the 5th, Brian Kiel and Resse Young opened the inning with singles. As Kiel swiped 3rd, an error on the play allowed him to score, then Max Barclay drove in Young with an rbi single to tie the game at 4-4.
There wasn’t a whole lot of activity on the basepaths until the top of the 8th when Teddy Dehler doubled with 2 outs for the Bulldogs, but Bryce Flanagan got a foul out to catcher Luke Zontelli to end the inning and keep it 4-4.
In the bottom of the 8th, after Brian Keil struck out William Carlson to open the inning, Bryce Flanagan took Keil deep for a solo Homer to put St. Mathias ahead 5-4.
Bryce Flanagan then struck out the side in the top of the 9th to seal the Devils 5-4 win, their first victory of the season.
