Clear Lake Lakers Ride Complete Game Effort From Jackson Phillipp and Big Day From Cooper Kosiba to 4-2 Win at Opole

Jackson Phillipp went the distance on the mound for the Clear Lake Lakers as the Lakers won a key road game 4-2 on Sunday over the Opole Bears at Red Bialka Memorial Field. Cooper Kosiba led the offense for Clear Lake with a single, double and solo Homer.

Both teams scored in the 1st inning, as the Lakers got lead-off man Nick Berglund on with an error to start the game, then stole 2nd. Berglund went to 3rd on a ground out to the right side, then scored on Caleb Leintz’s ground out to make it 1-0.

Opole tied it in the bottom of the 1st when Masyn Patrick led off with an infield single, was sacrificed to 2nd by a Brodi Huls bunt, tagged up and went to 3rd on a fly ball to right by Drew Lange, then scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-1.

Clear Lake made it 2-1 in the top of the 4th when Cooper Kosiba doubled with 2 outs. After a wild pitch and a walk, Quinten Dukowitz sent an rbi single to center to score Kosiba and make it 2-1.

In hindsight, the bottom of the 4th is the inning the Bears will look back on with regret. Drew Lange reached on an infield single to lead off, then a potential double play ball off the bat of Keaton Gustin was misplayed for an error and the Bears had runners at 1st and 2nd with no outs. Alex Lange then placed a perfect bunt up the 3rd base line for a single and Opole had the bases loaded with no outs. But Lakers starter Jackson Phillipp got Mavrick Novitski to ground to 3rd baseman Cooper Kosiba, who threw home for a force out. Phillipp then struck out both Luke Bieniek and Chris Ebnet to end the inning as the Bears came up empty.

In the top of the 6th, Cooper Kosiba belted a 1-out solo Homer to left to make it 3-1.

Cade Simones led off the top of the 7th with a single and took 2nd on a wild pitch. After stealing 3rd, Simones scored on an rbi single by Nick Berglund to make it 4-1 Lakers at the 7th inning stretch.

Opole made it 4-2 in the bottom of the 8th when Masyn Patrick reached on an error and stole 2nd, then after a single from Brodi Huls, Patrick scored on a sacrifice fly from Drew Lange to make it 4-2.

In the bottom of the 9th, the Bears did put the potential tying run on base and had the game-winning run at the plate against Jackson Phillipp. Mavrick Novitski walked with 1 out, Chris Ebnet singled with 2 outs to give Opole a chance.  But Jackson Phillipp ended the game by getting Jordan Schmitz to pop up to 1st baseman Blake Brown to end the game and give the Lakers the 4-2 road win.
