Matt Filippi and Beau Thoma combined to fire a 4-hit shutout over the Avon Lakers on Sunday on The Hill. That pair also combined to go 5-9 at the plate to lead an 11-hit attack for Sobieski. The Skis got 8th inning Home Runs from Matt Filippi and Riley Czech in the shutout. Jack Theisen and Caleb Curry had doubles for the Lakers.
Sobieski got the only runs they would eventually need in the bottom of the 1st when Beau Thoma opened the inning with a single to center, followed by a walk to Matt Filippi. Collin Kray was then hit by an Elian Mezquita pitch to fill the bases. Jake Kapphahn made it 1-0 with a sacrifice fly to center, and then an Avon error allowed matt Filippi to score and it was 2-0 after 1 inning.
The Skis loaded the bases in the bottom of the 2nd with singles from Riley Czech, Beau Thoma and matt Filippi, but then Collin Kray hit into a force out at the plate and Jake Kapphahn bounced into a 6-2-3 double play to end the inning.
The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the 7th when Beau Thoma led off with a single but then Matt Filippi hit into a double play. Collin Kray and Jake Kapphahn then both singled, followed by a Hudson Filippi rbi single to score Kray and make it 3-0 after 7.
In the bottom of the 8th, Alex Thoma reached on an error, then Riley Czech connected for a 2-run Homer to give the Skis a 5-0 lead. After Beau Thoma grounded out for the 2nd out, Matt Filippi Homered to right to make it 6-0.
Avon loaded the bases in the 9th on 2 walks and a Carter Holthaus single, but Elliott Burnett grounded out to 3rd to end the game.
