The Foley Lumberjacks edged the Avon Lakers 3-1 in Class B action on Sunday, as both pitching staffs dominate the action. Foley got a 1st inning 2-run double from Sam Keeler and that turned out to be enough run support for Trey Emmerich and Josiah Peterson, who combined for the Foley win.
In the bottom of the 1st, Foley struck for 2 runs when Drew Beier singled off Avon starter Matt Pichelmann with 1 out. Brett Leabch then was hit by pitch, followed by Sam Keeler doubling to left to score both runners and give the Lumberjacks a 2-0 lead after 1 inning.
Avon put together their first scoring threat in the top of the 3rd when Kadyn Mork, Elliott Burnett and Caleb Curry all singled to load the bases. Trey Emmerich then got Elian Mezquita to line out to center, and then got Carter Philippi to hit into an inning-ending double play to keep it 2-0.
Foley also threatened in the bottom of the 3rd, loading the bases with 1 out, but Matt Pichelmann got a double play ball of his own when Wyatt Ziwicki grounded to short to end the inning.
In the top of the 7th, the Lakers got singles from Matt Meyer and Carter Holthaus to open the inning, then a sacrifice bunt by Kadyn Mork put the tying run into scoring position with 1 out. Trey Emmerich then fanned Elliott Burnett before intentionally walking Caleb Curry. Emmerich then got Elain Mezquita to line out to center fielder Joe Ziwicki to end the Avon rally.
In the bottom of the 7th, Foley tacked on a run when Brett Leabch was hit by a pitch with 1 out. Sam Keeler then singled to move Leabch to 2nd. Dan Marod then went down on strikes for the 2nd out. Foley then executed a double steal with Leabch taking 3rd and Keeler swiping 2nd. On the throw to 3rd, the ball got away for an error, allowing Leabch to score to make it 3-0.
In the top of the 9th, Avon broke up the shutout when Elliott Burnett singled with 2 outs, followed by an rbi double from Caleb Curry to make it 3-1. With the tying run at the plate, relief pitcher Josiah Peterson got Elian Mezquita to ground out to shortstop Drew Beier to end the game with a 3-1 Foley win.
