Matt Kummet belted his 2nd Grand Slam Homer of the weekend to highlight a 5-run top of the 9th as Buckman forced a 5-5 tie and then a Matt Tautges rbi single in the top of the 12th was the difference maker in the Billygoats 6-5 win over the Steves at Trobec Memorial Field on Memorial Day.
After a scoreless first 4 innings, the Steves broke through for 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th. The first run came home on Cole Fuecker’s rbi single to score Andrew Wollak to make it 1-0. Mat Meyer then came through with a 2-run double, scoring Joe Tuholsky and Cole Fuecker to make it 3-0. With Lucas Greenlun pinch-running for Meyer, Jake Schelonka singled to move Greenlun to 3rd. Jack Greenlun then had an rbi single to score Lucas Greenlun and make it 4-0 after 5 innings.
In the bottom of the 8th, the Steves went up 5-0 when Derek Durant singled with 2 outs, and Carter Ramsey came in to pinch-run for Durant. Ramsey advanced to 2nd on a passed ball, then a sharp single by Matthew Young brought home Ramsey to make it 5-0 going to the top of the 9th.
In the top of the 9th, Buckman got a lead-off double down the right field line by Travis Kahl. Eric Buffington then walked to put runners at 1st and 2nd with no outs. Matt Tautges then grounded out to first with each runner moving up a base. A walk to Lane Girtz then filled the bases. With Jack Greenlun on the mound, he got Noah Boser on strikes to move the Steves 1 out from victory. But then a 4-pitch walk to Ben Thoma forced home Travis Kahl to make it 5-1. That brought up Matt Kummet, who had smashed a late-game Grand Slam Homer at Upsala on Sunday. This time, Kummet got a hold of a 3-1 pitch from Greenlun and sent it over the fence in right for a game-tying Grand Slam Homer and it was 5-5.
In the bottom of the 9th, Cole Fuecker led off with a single, followed by another single from Mat Meyer to move Fuecker to 3rd. With Matt Tautges on the mound, Buckman opted to intentionally walk Jake Schelonka to load the bases with no outs. Jack Greenlun hit a fly ball to right fielder Travis Kahl, and when Cole Fuecker tried to tag up and score the winning run from 3rd, Kahl’s throw was on the money to catcher Matt Kummet to tag out Fuecker for the 2nd out. With runners at 2nd and 3rd and 2 outs, Buckman again used the intentional walk, this time for Zach Fuecker, to set up a force out at any base. The strategy paid off as Tautges got Derek Durant to ground out to shortstop Lane Girtz for a force out at 2nd to send the game to extra innings.
In the top of the 10, Buckman managed a 2-out walk to Matt Tautges but that was it.
In the bottom of the 10th, Joe Tuholsky singled with 2 outs for the Steves but the game moved to the 11th.
In the top of the 11th, Jake Schelonka set the Billygoats down in order a pair of strikeouts and a pop out to shortstop.
In the bottom of the 11th, Mat Meyer opened the inning with a single. Matt Tautges then got Jake Schelonka to fly out to center fielder Andrew Rueckert for the 1st out with Meyer remaining at 1st. Jack Greenlun then reached on an error with Meyer advancing to 3rd and the Steves had men at the corners with 1 out. Greenlun stole 2nd. But then Meyer got picked off 3rd for the 2nd out and Tautges struck out Zack Fuecker and once again, the Billygoats had found away to stay alive.
In the top of the 12th, Andrew Rueckert flew to center and Max Barclay popped up to 1st for 2 quick outs. Travis Kahl then singled to center, followed by another single from Reese Young, pinch-hitting for Eric Buffington. Matt Tautges then had Buckman’s 3rd straight 2-out hit, a single to center, as Kahl scored from 2nd to give the Billygoats a 6-5 lead.
In the bottom of the 12th, Matt Tautges started by striking out Derek Durant, then pinch-hitter Landon Lunser grounded out to shortstop Lane Girtz for the 2nd out. Andrew Wollak kept the Steves hopes alive with a single, but then Tautges got Joe Tuholsky to ground out to 1st to end the game and give Buckman the 6-5 win in 12 innings over St. Stephen.
