The Nisswa Lightning beat the Avon Lakers 4-3 on Memorial Day at Blattner Field in Avon as Ben Dornseif threw a Complete Game for Nisswa. The righty only struck out 2 in the game, but he didn’t walk a hitter. He was especially effective at getting the Lakers hitters to hit the ball in the air consistently all game long as he got 19 of his 27 outs on pop ups or fly balls. Spencer Flaten and Drew Boland belted Homers and Flaten added a sacrifice fly to provide the offensive punch for Nisswa while Carter Philippi notched a 3-hit, 3-stolen base game for Avon.
Nisswa took the lead in the top of the 1st when Spencer Flaten crushed a solo Homer to left on the first pitch he saw from Cole Wellmann to make it 1-0.
In the top of the 4th, Sam Peterson reached base on a fielders choice, then Drew Boland drove a pitch over the fence in right to put the Lightning ahead 3-0.
Avon got on the board in the bottom of the 5th inning when Carter Philippi led off with a single, then stole 2nd. He scored on a 1-out rbi single by Jack Theisen to make it 3-1 after 5 innings.
In the top of the 7th, Kody Ruedisili beat out an infield single with 1 out and then swiped 2nd, and then took 3rd as well. Ruedisili then tagged up and scored on a sacrifice fly from Spencer Flaten to make it 4-1.
Avon made it really interesting in the bottom of the 9th when Elliott Burnett led off with a single to left, followed by a Caleb Curry double down the left field line. Ben Dornseif got Reese Gregory to ground out to shortstop, then Elian Mezquita flew out to center for a sacrifice fly that allowed Burnett to score and make it 4-2. With Carter Philippi up and the Lakers down to their final strike, Philippi ripped a single down the right field line, bringing home Curry to make it 4-3. Philippi then swiped his 3rd base of the game and Avon had the tying run at 2nd and the winning run at the plate in Cole Wellmann. But Dornseif got Wellmann to pop up to shortstop Sam Peterson in shallow left to end the game and secure Nisswa’s 4-3 win.
Nisswa improves to 2-2 while Avon drops to 0-4.
