Just over 2 weeks ago in Pierz, Opole’s Tate Lange flirted with a Perfect Game before issuing a 9th inning single and settling for a Complete Game 1-hit shutout in a 7-0 win over the Bulldogs. On Sunday at Red Bialka Memorial Field in Opole, it was Isaiah Folsom’s turn to throw a gem as the righty allowed only a 4th inning single in authoring his own Complete Game 1-hit shutout as the Bears blanked the St. Mathias Devils 7-0.
The Bears jumped ahead quickly, scoring 3 times in the bottom of the 1st against Devils starter Alex Guggisberg. Masyn Patrick led off with a single to center, followed by another single from Brodi Huls. Drew Lange then put down a bunt with Patrick racing around to score, Huls ending up at 3rd and Lange at 2nd. Luke Bieniek made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly as Brodi Huls tagged and scored to make it 2-0. After Guggisberg struck out Alex Lange for the 2nd out, Mavrick Novitski drove an rbi single to center, scoring Drew Lange and putting Opole ahead 3-0 after 1 inning.
In the top of the 4th, Isaiah Folsom struck out Hunter Wicklund, then Konnor Wicklund singled to right for the Devils 1st hit of the game. William Carlson then reached on an error to get the potential tying run to the plate with 1 out for St. Mathias, but Folsom struck out both Bryce Flanagan and Luke Zontelli to finish off the inning.
In the bottom of the 5th, Opole got back on the scoreboard when Alex Lange singled with 1 out, Mavrick Novitski walked and Tate Lange singled to load the bases. Dirks Opatz then was walked to force in Lange and make it 4-0 after 5 innings.
In the bottom of the 6th, Opole got walks to Brodi Huls and Drew Lange and then Luke Bieniek 2-run double to push the Bears lead to 6-0. Bieniek advanced to 3rd on an Alex Lange groundout, then scored on Mavrick Novitski’s groundout as Opole led 7-0 after 6 innings.
That was it for the scoring as Isaiah Folsom retired the final 7 men he faced and 17 of the final 18 batters after the 4th inning.
