The Pierz Brewers powered their way to a 14-3 win in 7 innings over the visiting St. Mathias Devils on Friday night at Hellie Field. Phil Zynda belted a pair of solo Homers and Preston Veith Homered and drove in 6 runs to lead a 14-hit attack. Pete Schommer threw the first 5 innings to get the Win. Bryce Flanagan belted a 3-run Homer in the 3rd for St. Mathias.
The Brewers struck for 5 runs in the bottom of the 1st against Devils starter Alex Guggisberg. Gunnar Wicklund led off the 1st with a double off the left field wall, followed by a Rylee Rauch rbi single to make it 1-0. Preston Veith then slammed a 2-run Homer just inside the right field foul pole to make it 3-0. Phil Zynda then bashed the first pitch he saw into the pine trees in center field to make it 4-0. Derek Dahmen then walked, Chuck Boser singled and Michael Nezerka sacrificed both men to 3rd base. Mike Leidenfrost’s sacrifice fly to right brought home Dahmen to make it 5-0 after 1 inning.
In the bottom of the 2nd, Gunnar Wicklund led off with his 2nd double of the game, a ball that bounced on the warning tack and right and hopped over the fence. Rylee Rauch then doubled as well, but Wicklund was only able to gain 3rd base. Preston Veith delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0, and after a walk to Phil Zynda, Derek Dahmen drilled an rbi single to make it 7-0 after 2 innings.
The Devils put their only 3 runs on the board in the top of the 3rd when Kyle Welle led off with a walk, Josh Kossan singled with 1 out and then with 2 outs, Bryce Flanagan belted a 3-run Homer to left to make it 7-3.
Phil Zynda connected for his 2nd Homer of the night leading of the bottom of the 4th to make it 8-3.
In the bottom of the 5th, Ryan Stuckmayer doubled with 1 out, then Gunnar Wicklund was intentionally walked, followed by another walk to Rylee Rauch to load the bases with 1 out. Preston Veith then bounced into a fielders choice, forcing out Rauch but driving in Stuckmayer to make it 9-3 after 5 innings.
Phil Zynda took over the pitching duties in the 6th for the Brewers, giving up a lead-off walk to Tydan Guida, but then retiring the next 3 hitters.
In the bottom of the 6th, Josh Kossan took over on the mound for the Devils and walked Pete Schommer. Michal Nezerka then singled. Mike Leidenfrost attempted to sacrifice bunt, but Josh Kossan was able to field the ball and got a force out 3rd. Ryan Stuckmayer then hit into a fielders choice for the 2nd out but a throwing error as the Devils attempted to complete a double play allowed Nezerka to score and make it 10-3. The Devils then intentionally walked Gunnar Wicklund for the 3rd time, and followed with a walk to Rylee Rauch to load the bases. Preston Veith then singled, plating both Ryan Stuckmayer and Gunnar Wicklund to make it 12-3, giving Veith his 5th and 6th rbi’s of the game. After a Phil Zynda single, Rylee Rauch was at 3rd. On a throw back to the pitcher Kossan from catcher Luke Zontelli, the ball glanced off Kossan’s glove for an error and Rylee Rauch alertly sprinted home with another run, making it 13-3. Derek Dahmen then capped off the scoring with a line-drive rbi double just inside the right field line to drive home pinch-runner Jack Prokott to make it 14-3.
In the top of the 7th, Phil Zynda loaded the bases with 3 walks, but he ended the game with a strikeout of Tydan Guida to finish off the Brewers 14-3 win in 7 innings.
