The Pierz Lakers downed the Royalton Riverdogs 3-1 on Sunday in Royalton for their 2nd win of the weekend and their 4th victory overall Noah Cekalla had 3 hits including a solo Homer and Carter Petron and David Kroger combined to limit Royalton to 5 hits in the Lakers win.
Noah Cekalla gave the Lakers an early lead with a 1-out solo Homer off Royalton starter Marcus Hayes.
Pierz made it 2-0 in the top of the 2nd when Kolten Happke reached on a 1-out error, went to 2nd on a single by Chase Becker, and Pierz then loaded the bases with a walk to Kamden Happke. After a Hayes strike out of Kirby Fischer for the 2nd, Ryan Chmielewski drove in Kolten Happke with fielders choice grounder, with Chmielewski safely reaching base to put Pierz ahead 2-0.
Royalton made it 2-1 in the bottom of the 2nd inning when Joe Gaida walked and was wild pitched to 2nd by Carter Petron. Nick Henry then singled to drive in Gaida to make it 2-1.
In the top of the 5th, the Lakers tallied the last run of the game on Ryan Chmielewski’s lead-off single, a steal of 2nd, a single by Noah Cekalla and a run-scoring ground out by Carter Petron to make it 3-1.
Royalton’s next best chance to score came in the bottom of the 6th when Tyler Jendro singled with 1 out, but was then forced out on a ground ball by Joe Gaida. Zack Cekalla then doubled to left to put the tying run in scoring position with 2 outs, but Carter Petron finished off his day on the mound with a ground out to shortstop Kamden Happke to keep it 3-1.
Neither team really threatened to score the rest of the game, as the Lakers turned the ball over to David Kroger in the 7th. Kroger faced the minimum 9 men over the final 3 innings, getting a 1-2-3 7th, then issuing a 1-out walk in the 8th before getting a double play, and in the 9th, Kroger closed things out with a pair of middle infield ground outs and a strikeout to polish off the Lakers 3-1 win.
