Ryan Chmielewski singled home 2 runs in the top of the 10th and then scored on an error as the Pierz Lakers downed the Fort Ripley Rebels 5-2 in 10 innings on Saturday in Fort Ripley.
The Lakers and Rebels were locked in a great pitcher’s duel as Lakers starter Preston Rocheleau and Rebels starter Jack Schafer both took shutouts into the 7th inning.
The Lakers finally got on the board in the top of the 7th when Noah Cekalla reached on a 1-out error, then Kamden Happke doubled to left to move Cekalla to 3rd. The Rebels then brought in Tyler Gruye to relieve Jack Schafer. Carter Petronthen drove in 2 runs to make it 2-0.
In the bottom of the 7th, Jack Tiemann led off by reaching on an error, followed by a Wyatt Gabrielson single. A Hakon Haapajoki groundout moved runners to 2nd and 3rd with 1 out, setting up Riley Derosier for a game-tying 2-run double to center. Noah Cekalla then relieved Preston Rocheleau on the mound and got a pair of strikeouts to end the 7th all tied up at 2-2.
In the top of the 8th, Brady Petron singled with 1 out, but Tyler Gruye got Chase Becker to ground into an inning double play.
In the bottom of the 8th, Eli Roberts led off with a single for the Rebels, but Noah Cekalla got the next 3 hitters on a ground out and 2 strikeouts to move the game to the 9th.
Tyler Gruye retired the Lakers in order in the top of the 9th with all 3 outs coming by fly balls to center fielder Eli Roberts.
In the bottom of the 9th, the Rebels put the potential winning run on base with a 2-out single by Riley Derosier, but Noah Cekalla fanned Tyler Gruye to send the game to extra innings tied at 2-2.
In the top of the 10th, Kamden Happke led off by reaching on an error. After a steal of 2nd, Happke went to 3rd on a single by Carter Petron. After Petron stole 2nd, Ryan Chmielewski singled to right to score both Happke and Petron and put the Lakers ahead 4-2. Ryan Diers then walked, an d a ground ball by Brady Petron was booted for an error as Chmielewski scored to make it 5-2. Tyler Gruye got a line out, a ground out and a strikeout to leave runners at 2nd and 3rd.
In the bottom of the 10th, Noah Cekalla struck out Jack Schafer, then Eli Roberts reached on an error. Cekalla then struck out Mason Argir for the 2nd out and then ended the game with a strikeout of Alex Haapajoki to complete the Lakers 5-2 win in 10 innings.
