The Randall Cubs, a State Tournament team from last year and this year’s #1 seed in the Region 9C Tournament, kiept their season alive in the consolation round with an 8-0 win over the St. Wendel Saints on Friday night in Pierz in an elimination game.
After a scoreless first 2 1/2 innings, the Cubs put a run on the board in the bottom of the 3rd against Saints starter Carter Voss when Alex Gwost singled with 1 out and was wild pitched to 2nd. Nate Benning then delivered an rbi single to bring home Gwost and give the Cubs a 1-0 lead after 3 innings.
In the bottom of the 4th, Garrett Lindbergh walked and Brett Strack singled, followed by a 2-run single down the right field line from Kyle Peterschick to give Randall a 3-0 lead after 4 innings.
Randall then opened it up in the bottom of the 7th when they loaded the bases with 1 out, then Garrett Lindbergh ripped a bases-clearing double to drive in Zack Gwost, Matt Otremba and Caleb Strack to make it 6-0. After a single from Brett Strack, Kyle Peterschick drove in Lindbergh with an rbi groundout to put Randall ahead 7-0 after 7 innings.
The Cubs put up their final run in the bottom of the 8th when Nate Benning led off with a single, followed by a walk to Zack Gwost. After an error and a pop up, Caleb Strack drove in Benning with a ground out to make it 8-0 after 8 innings.
Randall starter Adam Nibaur went the distance to get the shutout Win, scattering 6 hits while striking out 9. He allowed just 1 hit after the 4th inning, a bunt single to Tyler Huls in the 7th.
The loss means the end of the season for St. Wendel. With the Win, Randall will now face the Pierz Bulldogs in the 3rd round elimination game on Sunday at 10:30 am in Opole.
