The St. Stephen Steves completed their Sunday sweep of the Holdingford Express with a 13-2 win in Game 2. Blake Guggenberger matched Game 1 winning pitcher Andy Stolt’s effort by also going the distance, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 7. Playing Game 2 as the visitors, the Steves jumped on Holdingford starter Jon Springer for 4 runs in the top of the 1st. Ben Omann walked to force in a run, Dylan Hollenkamp singled home 2 more and Jason Slivnik had a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0 after a half an inning. Derek Thielen’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 1st put the Express on the board, trailing 4-1. The Steves got that run back in the 4th on a Sam Neeser sacrifice fly and it was 5-1. 3 more runs on the Steves side of the ledger came home in the 6th on Blake Guggenberger’s rbi double, then an Austin Guggenberger rbi double and finally a Bo Schmitz run-scoring single, making it 8-1 after 5 1/2. Holdingford’s final run came in the bottom of the 6th on Ian Hoffarth’s sac fly. St. Stephen salted the game away with a 5-run top of the 9th. Ben Omann had an rbi double, Jason Slivnik drove in 2 with a single and a Nick Krippner fielder’s choice also got a run across. The sweep finished off a 3-win weekend as the Steves had secured a 10-3 win over Royalton at home on Saturday.

The St. Stephen Steves and Holdingford Express played a doubleheader at Trobec Field Sunday and the Steves finished the day with an impressive sweep. In Game 1, the Steves were the home squad. The normally effective, reliable Holdingford lefty Derek Thielen was anything but this day however as he never made it out of the 1st inning, getting just 1 out, allowing 6 of the 8 runs the Steves scored in the bottom of the 1st. Thielen gave up an rbi single to Dylan Hollenkamp, walked 5 and uncorked 3 wild pitches before he was yanked in favor of Austin Gerads. Gerads would then hit the only 2 men he would face before he too was relieved, this time by Ryan Szymanski. He would settle things down but all the damage had been done by that point. Szymanski allowed 1 run on 8 hits over the final 7 2/3. On the flip side, Steves starter Andy Stolt threw a complete-game, 5-hit shutout while striking out 7. After that 8-run 1st inning, the games only other run came in the Steves half of the 6th on a sacrifice fly by Austin Guggenberger to complete the scoring at 9-0.

The Devils tied the game in the 4th on Ben Stall’s rbi double, scoring Zach Heidmann with the tying run. After Jordan Hunstad went the first 4 innings for St. Mathias, allowing 1 run and no hits, the Devils turned things over to Brandon Owen in the 5th. Brock Cichon belted a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 5th to provide the winning margin as Upsala won 4-1. Cichon would deliver all 4 Upsala rbi’s. Adam Gerads had the only other Upsala hit.

It’s not often that one of the most feared offensive lineups in the entire State gets outhit, but that’s what happened Sunday afternoon at City Park in Nisswa as the Cuyuna Range Miners outhit the Lightning 12-11. But in a game that went extra innings, the Lightning were able to prevail, eking out a 6-5 win in 10. Cuyuna Range got an rbi single by Luke Zontelli in the 1st against Nisswa starter Scott Sand to grab a 1-0 lead. Nisswa got that run back in the bottom of the 1st on Tyler Wittwer’s run-scoring double. It stayed 1-1 until the 5th when Lance Herbst put the Miners back in front with an rbi single. That lead grew to 5-1 against new pitcher Luke Schumer in the 6th on a Dillon Solid rbi double and a Nisswa error that allowed 2 runs to score. Nathan Ehnstorm kept the potent Nisswa lineup in check until the bottom of the 7th when Nisswa tied it with 4 runs, 2 of which came on an Adam Hardy double and another on a wild pitch and it was 5-5 after 7. Schumer would blank the Miners after that 3-run 6th inning however. The game went to the bottom of the 10th where Drew Boland tripled. The Miners then opted to have Dillon Solid issue consecutive intentional walks to fill the bases. Solid would then walk Luke Schumer to force in Boland and give Nisswa the literal “walk-off” win 6-5. The win allowed the Lightning to keep pace with Ft. Ripley in the North race, both teams are now 6-1 with 4 games left, including a Friday night, July 3rd matchup between the two front-runners in Nisswa. Ft. Ripley has already beaten Nisswa, besting the Lightning 8-2 in Ft. Ripley on May 24th. The Rebels only setback came on Opening Day when Sobieski rallied for a 5-4 win on the Rebels home turf.

Chad Weiss turned in his best pitching performance of the year Sunday night as Lastrup made their first-ever visit to Black Sox Park in Freeport a successful one with an 8-1 win over the Black Sox. Weiss handcuffed Freeport hitters, allowing just 1 run on 3 hits over 8 innings while striking out 7. Mitch Reller, the starter for Freeport was pitching equally as well as the game was scoreless heading to the bottom of the 5th. Ike Sawyer led off with a single and promptly stole 2nd. Johnny Benson then singled to left to put runners at the corners with no outs. Mitch Waldvogel drove in Sawyer on a fielder’s choice. Weiss ended the inning with a pair of infield pop outs, but the Black Sox had a 1-0 lead after 5. Things unraveled quickly in the 6th for Reller and the Sox. Reller walked #9 hitter Brandon Lochner on 4 pitches to lead off. Chad Weiss then walked on 5 pitches. Paul Herman legged out a bunt for an infield single to fill the bases. When Reller walked Rick Schlieman to force in a run and tie the game at 1-1, Freeport went to the bullpen and brought in veteran lefty Peter Burg. He promptly walked Brad Meyer on 4 pitches and Lastrup had a 2-1 lead. Jason Sadlovsky grounded into a 1st to home force play for out #1. Reggie Litke then singled to left to drive in a run and when the throw from left eluded catcher Johnny Benson, Brad Meyer raced home to make it 4-1. A sacrifice fly by Scott Janson and a fielding error added 2 more runs and Lastrup suddenly had a 6-1 lead. From the 4th through 8th innings, Weiss retired 11 straight. Nate Winter took over from Burg to start the 7th. He gave up an rbi single to Brad Meyer in the 7th to make it 7-1 and an 8th inning rbi single to Weiss made it 8-1. Reggie Litke threw a 1-2-3 9th inning to finish things off as Lastrup moved a half game ahead of Buckman in the East race with 1 game to play. Lastrup will host the Pierz Brewers next Saturday night at Legion Park in Pierz in their final regular season game. Freeport remains 1 1/2 games behind Avon in the South and the Sox host the Lakers this coming Friday night at 8:00 pm.

Strikeouts a plenty in Buckman Sunday as 3 pitchers combined to whiff 26 as the Buckman Billgoats edged the Pierz Bulldogs 4-3. Bulldogs starter Aaron Schultz was staked to an early lead as Pierz scored twice in the top of the 1st off Goats starter Corey Egan. Drew Elness had an rbi double and Logan Meyer added an rbi single to give the Dogs the early advantage. Buckman got a run in the bottom of the 1st when Zach Lanners singled to score a run and it was 2-1. The Bulldogs went ahead 3-1 in the 3rd on a ball misplayed in the outfield for an error, allowing an unearned run to score. Buckman rallied to tie the game with 2 runs in the 6th off Schultz. Travis Kahl doubled to drive in a run, and then advanced to 3rd on the throw home. Kahl then scampered home when the throw to 3rd to try and nab him was offline, and it was 3-3 after 6. Corey Egan pitched through the 7th, striking out 10 for Buckman. He left with a no-decision. The Billygoats got the eventual winning run in the bottom of the 8th when Shawn Lanners doubled. He was pinch-run for by Joe Kahl. Noah Boser’s base hit got Kahl home with the winning run and made a winner of relief pitcher Mark Kahl, who threw 2 perfect innings of relief, striking out 3. Shawn Lanners and Travis Kahl had 2 doubles each for Buckman. Logan Meyer had 3 hits and drove in a run for Pierz. Schultz went the distance for the Dogs, striking out 13. The victory keeps Buckman locked in a tie with Lastrup atop the East at 9-2.

In a battle of Division leaders Sunday, Lastrup, who entered the day sharing the East lead with Buckman, downed the Avon Lakers 11-4. Avon began the day with a game and half lead over Freeport in the South. After both starting pitchers, Brad Meyer for Lastrup and Kyle Collins for Avon, worked a 1-2-3 1st inning, Lastrup pushed 4 runs across in the 2nd on 5 hits, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly. Reggie Litke singled home a run and would later come home on a wild pitch. Brandon Lochner’s sacrifice fly made it 3-0 and Chad Weiss added an rbi single to make it 4-0. Avon didn’t collect their first hit off Brad Meyer until Caleb Curry lined an rbi double, scoring Cody Stich from 1st with 2 outs in the 3rd as Avon shaved the lead to 4-1 after 3. Collins returned to form, blanking Lastrup in the 3rd and 4th. In the top of the 5th, Paul Herman and Rick Schlieman singled with 1 out. Brad Meyer then hit a potential double play ball up the middle, but Avon was only able to get a force out at 2nd to keep the inning alive for Jason Sadlovsky. Sadlovsky made that little bobble in the field hurt as he smoked a 3-run homer to right on the next pitch to make it 7-1. Avon had their most productive inning in the 6th, scoring 3 runs. 3straight 1-out singles by Caleb Curry, Riley Voit and Matt Meyer loaded the bases and started the rally. Reed Voit’s ground out to 1st produced 1run, and Avon would add a run on a balk and an error to make it 7-4 after 6. Lastrup got the games final 4 runs in the 7th off reliever Cody Stich, who had taken over from Collins after that 5th inning. Paul Herman singled with 1 out, followed by Rick Schlieman’s fly to medium center. Avon center fielder Rick Hendrickson raced in and appeared to deke Herman, causing him to hold up between 1st and 2nd. However the ball fell well in front of Hendrickson, who then picked up the ball and fired it to 2nd to force out Herman. With Cody Meyer pinch-running for Schlieman, Brad Meyer walked. Jason Sadlovsky then drilled a 2-run double, making it 9-4. Reggie Litke was then hit by a pitch. With 2 outs and runners at 1st and 2nd, a wild pitch allowed both men to advance. That took the force out off the table. Dan Saehr then hit a grounder near the 3rd base bag, meaning that instead of simply being able to take 1 step and touch 3rd for an inning-ending force play, Matt Meyer’s only play was to 1st. His throw was off target, and both Sadlovsky and Litke scored on the error to make it 11-4. Avon threatened one last time in the 9th, loading the bases on 3 singles but Meyer got Riley Voit to line out to left to end the game.

The Nisswa Lightning moved into a 1st place tie with the Ft. Ripley Rebels on top of the North Division with a 10-3 win over the visiting Upsala Bluejays on Saturday. After a scoreless inning and a half, Tyler Wittwer hit a 1-out solo homer in the bottom of the 2nd go put Nisswa up 1-0. Upsala answered in the top of the 3rd as Brandon Welinski singled with 1 out, stole 2nd, moved to 3rd on a groundout and then scored on a Ben Burggraff single. Burggraff was thrown out at 2nd by CF Drew Boland to end the inning. In the bottom of the 3rd, Nisswa took the lead back when Aaron Jenkins led off with a walk, followed by singles from Jeremiah Piepkorn and Jason Roepke to load the bases. After a pair of strikeouts, Tyler Wittwer hit a ground ball to 1st that was mishandled, allowing Jenkins to score. Morgan Sheperd was then hit by a pitch to score Piepkorn, making it 3-1. It stayed that way until the top of the 5th when the Bluejays loaded the bases on an Adam Gerads single, a walk to Justin Cichon and a Brandon Welinski hit. Dustin Biniek then doubled to score 2 runs, and Welinski was gunned down at the plate trying to score from 1st to end the inning and preserve the 3-3 tie. The Lightning scored two in the bottom of the 5th on a 2-out rbi single by Drew Boland . On the play, Boland got caught in a rundown between 1st and 2nd which allowed Brett Jenkins to score the 2nd run on the play, making it 5-3. Nisswa added 2 more in the 7th on a 2-out, 2-run homer by Aaron Jenkins and it was 7-3. Upsala threatened in the 9th as Brock Cichon reached on catcher’s interference, and Justin Cichon followed with a walk. But Tory Miller got Brandon Welinski to line back to him and doubled the runner off 1st for two outs, and then got a game-ending groundout to finish the contest.

The Buckman Billygoats handed the Avon Lakers their first loss of the season in a come-from-behind 7-5 victory and in doing so, moved into a 1st place tie with Lastrup atop the East. Avon and starting pitcher Troy Wunderlich lead 5-4 after 6 innings when the Lakers turned the ball over to Adam Harlander. Buckman rallied for 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th to take the win. A 1-out triple by Zach Lanners ignited the rally. Noah Boser singled to score Lanners and tie the game 5-5. Lane Girtz then singled and both Boser and Girtz scored on a double by Travis Kahl to complete the rally at 7-5. Jeremy Monson picked up the complete game win for the Goats. Both Buckman and Lastrup are now 8-2 with 3 games left. Both teams play Sunday with Lastrup going to Avon for a 1:30 game and the Billygoats will host the Bulldogs at 1:30. The Opole Bears gained an important victory over the St. Mathias Devils Saturday afternoon, defeating the Devils 6-4. Jake Nelson went all 9 to get the win for Opole. Mason Quick also threw a complete game for St. Mathias. Overnight rains forced the game to be pushed back a couple of hours but when the game did begin, it was St. Mathias that struck first, plating 2 runs in the 2nd on Jordan Hunstad’s rbi single and an error. Opole got 1 of those runs back in the bottom of the 2nd on Sam Butler’s rbi single and it was 2-1 Devils after 2. The Bears grabbed the lead the following inning on a Zack Bialka rbi single and a wild pitch to go up 3-2. They added a run on a Devils error in the 4th to go up 4-2. David Bialka added a run-scoring groundout in the 6th to make it 5-2 and another Devils error brought home the Bears 6th run of the day. St. Mathias rallied in the 8th, getting 2 runs on a dropped fly ball with 2 outs to make it 6-4 but that turned out to be the last gasp for St. Mathias as the Bears moved a game and a half ahead of Flensburg for the 4th and final playoff spot in the West. The Falcons will host the Bears next Saturday in an almost must-win game for Flensburg. The Devils continue to search for their first win, falling to 0-6.

The Freeport Black Sox used a 9-run 4th inning to blow open their game with the St. Wendel Saints and cruised to a 14-3 win at Black Sox Park Saturday night. Freeport got on the scoreboard first when Ike Sawyer drove an 0-2 offering from Kyle Jarnot over the fence in left with Grant Hess aboard to give Freeport a 2-0 lead after 2. The Sox doubled their lead to 4-0 in the 3rd on Carter Sawyer’s rbi single and a run-scoring groundout Grant Hess. St. Wendel broke up Carter Sawyer’s shutout with a run in the top of the 4th when Taylor Nitz led off with a walk, stole 2nd and scored on John Pogatchnik’s 1-out single up the middle. With the score still a competitive 4-1 entering the bottom of the 4th, Freeport sent 14 men to the plate against 3 different Saints hurlers. They scored 9 runs to break it open. Seth Noll led off with a double, Eric Evaslage followed with a single to put runners at the corners with no outs. Carter Sawyer then singled to drive in Noll. Chad Hess followed with a walk and Troy Frieler’s single plated Evaslage with the 2nd run of the inning, spelling the end of the night for Jarnot. Nick Konz took over and it didn’t get any better as Chad Hess would score on a wild pitch, Konz then forced in a run with a walk, then got a strikeout, but 2 more bases-loaded walks meant another trip to the mound for Ron Pogatchnik, as he brought in Ryan Bloomer to pitch. Bloomer gave up a 2-run double to Seth Noll, a sacrifice fly to Eric Evaslage and another rbi single by Carter Sawyer efore finally getting out of the inning with a groundout. All told, the Sox scored 9 runs on 6 hits, a wild pitch, 2 bases-loaded walks and a sacrifice fly. Seth Noll doubled twice in the inning and Carter Sawyer had 2 rbi singles that inning. When the dust settled, it was 13-1 after 4. Freeport got their final run in the 5th on newly-signed Kyle Klasen’s rbi double to make it 14-1. The Saints got an rbi groundout by Trevor Van Heel in the 6th and a sacrifice fly by DJ Brown in the 7th to make the final 14-3.

The Sobieski Skis had their hands full with the Flensburg Falcons on Saturday on Hall of Fame Saturday in Sobieski. Ike Thoma belted the first pitch from Litchy over the fence in left to make it 4-3. Leading off the bottom of the 7th, Jon Czech homered to dead center to push the lead back to 2, 5-3.
