Sobieski Pounds Foley 11-2 in a Battle of League Leaders

Both the Sobieski Skis and the the Foley Lumberjacks, along with the Buckman Billygoats, entered Sunday’s action with identical 4-1 records and entrenched in a 3-way tie for the Class B Division lead in the Victory League. The Skis rode Home Runs from Collin Eckman and Matt Filippi and multi-double games from Alex Thoma and Jake Kapphahn and a combined 5-hit pitching performance from Matt Filippi and Beau Thoma to an impressive 11-2 win in Foley.

The Skis got off to a big start when Beau Thoma led off the game with a double off of Foley starter Lane Olson. Matt Filippi then launched a 2-run Homer and the Skis were already up 2-0 just 2 batters into the game. Collin Kray was then hit by a pitch and Jake Kapphahn singled. Olson got his first out of the game on a sacrifice bunt by Hudson Filippi. Collin Eckman then singled to drive in Kray and make it 3-0. Olson got out of the inning when Alex Thoma lined into an inning-ending double play.

In the top of the 3rd, Matt Filippi was hit by a pitch, then Collin Kray reached on an error. Jake Kapphahn then bunted into a force out at 3rd and Hudson Filippi flew out to center fielder Joe Ziwicki for the 2nd out. Collin Eckman then cranked out a 3-run Homer to left to double the Skis lead to 6-0.

In the top of the 6th, Collin Eckman led off with a single and scored on a double by Alex Thoma to make it 7-0.

In the 7th, the lead grew to 10-0 when Collin Kray singled with 1 out and Hudson Filippi walked with 2 outs. Collin Eckman then singled to drive in Kray and it was 8-0. Alex Thoma then ripped a double, plating both Hudson Filippi and Collin Eckman to grow the Skis lead to 10-0.

Foley avoided the 10-run rule with 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th when Drew Beier led off with a walk and Lane Olson was hit by a pitch with 1 out. Beier then scored on a Dan Marod rbi double to make it 10-1, and Ean Von Wald singled to drive in Olson to make it 10-2 after 7 innings.

In the top of the 8th, Sobieski got a 1-out double from Matt Filippi, then a 2-out rbi double from Jake Kapphahn to make it 11-2.

Foley managed one more baserunner in the game when Lane Olson singled with 2 outs in the 8th but that was it as the Skis were 11-2 road winners.
