Sobieski Routs St. Stephen 18-6 to go 2-0

In the only Class B game played in the Victory Leage on Sunday, the Sobieski Skis erupted for a 7-run top of the 2nd and never looked back. The Skis got Home Runs from Beau Thoma, Dusty Parker and Jake Kapphahn while Mat Meyer connected for a 2-run blast in the 1st as the Steves took an early lead.

After Steves starter Jack Greenlun retired the Skis in order in the top of the 1st, the Steves quickly put up a 3-run inning in the bottom of the 1st. Charlie Kent led off with a walk against starter Jake Kapphahn, as did Jake Schelonka. Kent would score on a wild pitch to make it 1-0, and then Mat Meyer sent a Home Run ball into the forest in center field at Trobec Memorial Field to give St. Stephen a 3-0 lead after 1 inning.

The lead was short lived however. In the top of the 2nd, Jake Kapphahn led off with a walk, followed by a Dusty Parker single. Riley Czech then beat out a bunt single to load the bases. Alex Thoma then singled to right to drive in Kapphahn to make it 3-1 with the bases still loaded and no outs. Jack Greenlun got his first out on a strikeout of Collin Eckman, but then Owen Bode walked to force in Dusty Parker to make it 3-2. Greenlun then walked Beau Thoma as well as Riley Czech came in to score the tying run at 3-3. Matt Filippi then singled to center to give the Skis a 4-3 lead as Alex Thoma scored the go-ahead run. The big hit of the inning though came from Joey Welinski, who cleared the bases with a 3-run double to left and the Skis were up 7-3 before Jack Greenlun got 2 more strikeouts to finally end the inning.

Sobieski added a run in the top of the 4th on walks to Matt Filippi and Jake Kapphahn and a Dusty Parker rbi single to make it 8-3.

In the top of the 5th, Sobieski struck for 2 more runs when Owen Bode walked with 2 outs, then Beau Thoma launched a 2-run Homer to left and it was 10-3.

The Steves got a lead-off double from Derek Durant in the bottom of the 5th, but reliever Joey Welinski got a strikeout and 2 pop ups ended the 5th with Sobieski ahead 10-3.

It was a 2-run 6th inning for the Skis as Jake Kapphahn led off with a walk and eventually scored on a wild pitch to make it 11-3. After a walk to Riley Czech and a Steves error on an Alex Thoma grounder, Collin Eckman also reached on an error, then a 2nd error on the same play allowed Riley Czech to come in and the Skis were now up 12-3.

St. Stephen got 2 runs back in the bottom of the 7th when Reid Lunser led off with a pinch-hit single, then Derek Durant was hit by a Joey Welinski pitch. After a sacrifice bunt by Thomas Ellis, Jake Schelonka walked to fill the bases with 1 out. After Joey Welinski got a strikeout, Jack Greenlun singled to bring in both Lunser and Durant to make it 12-5 after 7 innings.

In the top of the 8th, Jake Kapphahn and Dusty Parker blasted back-to-back Home Runs to make it 14-5.

In the bottom of the 8th, the Steves scored their final run Carter Ramsey led off with a single. After a strikeout and a fly out with Dusty Parker now on the mound, Derek Durant singled to put runners at the corners with 2 outs. Thomas Ellis then singled to score Ramsey to make it 14-6 after 8 innings.

In the top of the 9th, Beau Thoma led off with a double and went to 3rd on a ground out by Matt Filippi. Zach Opatz then delivered a sacrifice fly to score Thoma and make it 15-6. Matt Baier then doubled, then came in to score on an error off a Dusty Parker ground ball and it was 16-6. Riley Czech then singled, followed by a walk to Alex Thoma to load the bases. Collin Eckman then singled to left to drive in both Parker and Czech to make it 18-6.

St. Stephen loaded the bases with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th on a walk to pinch-hitter Josh Mohr, an error and a walk to Justin Hunt.  But the game ended when Reid Lunser grounded out to 3rd baseman Alex Thoma as the Skis had the 18-6 win in hand.
