The Foley Lumberjacks hosted the St. Stephen Steves on Sunday in a game pitting a pair of struggling teams. The Steves had lost 4 straight while the Lumberjacks were on a 5-game losing skid, putting both teams at identical 2-6 records.
It initially looked like it was going to be a low-scoring, pitchers battle as the first 3 innings sailed by as Foley starter Trey Emmerich held the Steves hitless through the first 3 innings while St. Stephen starter Jack Greenlun allowed only an infield single to Vince Jurek to lead off the bottom of the 3rd.
Things started to open up in the top of the 4th as teams began to work their way through the 2nd time in the lineup. Cole Fuecker led off the top of the 4th with a single and was wild pitched to 2nd. After Mat Meyer lined out to shortstop Chuck Hackett, Mitch Delfino walked. A single by Jack Greenlun loaded the bases, then another wild pitch from Trey Emmerich allowed Fuecker to score and make it 1-0. After a strikeout, Brody Sabin drilled a 2-run single to score both Delfino and Greenlun to give the Steves a 3-0 lead.
Foley got their lead-off man on in the bottom of the 4th on a walk to Brett Leabch. Chuck Hackett then hit into a force play and Jack Greenlun then got Trey Emmerich to bounce back to the mound, where Greenlun started an inning-ending 1-6-3 double play.
In the top of the 5th, Charlie Kent got things started by getting hit by an Emmerich pitch, then Jake Schelonka singled. A walk to Cole Fuecker filled the bases. Mat Meyer then singled to drive in Kent and make it 4-0 with the bases still full. After Mitch Delfino popped up to shortstop, Jack Greenlun his a slow roller to the left side that was misplayed for an error. Both Schelonka and Fuecker scored on the play to make it 6-0. Joe Tuholsky and Brody Sabin followed with hits and the Steves had the bases loaded again. After Sabin’s opposite-field singloe to left, Foley brought in Michael Moulzolf to relieve Trey Emmerich. His first pitch was sent back up the middle by Thomas Ellis for a 2-run single as Greenlun and Tuholsky scored to make it 8-0 before the inning finally ended.
In the bottom of the 5th, Vince Jurek was hit by a Jack Greenlun pitch with 1 out, but then Greenlun struck out Colby Johnson and Steves catcher Brdy Sabin fired to 1st to pick off Jurek for a double play to end the 5th with the Steves in front 8-0.
In the top of the 6th, Jake Schelonka led off with a walk and eventually scored on a 2-out rbi single from Mitch Delfino to make it 9-0 in favor of the Steves.
Jake Schelonka took over the pitching duties for the Steves to start the bottom of the 6th. After striking out Wyatt Ziwicki, Drew Beier dropped a single into right field, followed by a single from Joe Ziwicki. Schelonka then caught Brett Leabch looking at strike 3, but then hit Chuck Hackett to load the bases with 2 outs. Trey Emmerich then walked to force in Drew Beier and make it 9-1.
In the top of the 7th, St. Stephen opened it up once again. Brody Sabin lined out to 3rd, then Thomas Ellis reached on an error and Charlie Kent singled. After Jake Schelonka flew out to center, Cole Fuecker singled to load the bases for Mat Meyer, who blased a Grand Slam Homer to left-center to put the Steves ahead 13-1. The Steves weren’t done however, as Mitch Delfino made it back-to-back Homers with a blast to center and it was now 14-1.
It looked like the game was going to be over due to the 10-run rule after 7 innings, but the Lumberjacks said “not so fast, my friend.” With LandonLunser now on to pitch for the Steves, Vince Jurek singled, Colby Johnson reached on an error and Wyatt Ziwickicame through with an rbi single to score Jurek to make it 14-2. After a groundout by Drew Beier, Joe Ziwicki crushed a 3-run Homer and it was 14-5. Brett Leabch then walked, Chuck Hackett singled and a Trey Emmerich ground ball was misplayed for the 2nd Steves error of the inning as Leabch scored to make it 14-6 after 7 innings.
After neither team scored in the 8th, Jake Schelonka led off the 9th with a single, followed by a 2-run Homer from Cole Fuecker and it was 16-6.
Cole Fuecker came on to pitch the bottom of the 9th for the Steves and set down the Lumberjacks in order to end the game and snap Foley’s 4-game losing streak with the 16-6 win.
