The Foley Lumberjacks outslug the Nisswa Lightning on Opening Day for a 14-9 win

The Foley Lumberjacks posted back-to-back 5-run innings in the 2nd and 3rd to seize control of their game with the visiting Nisswa Lightning and that was enough to hold of Nisswa for a 14-9 win.  Drew Beier and Joe Ziwicki belted Homers for Foley while Sam Peterson smashed 3 Home Runs for the Lightning.

Nisswa scored in the top of the 1st on a Jeremiah Piepkorn rbi single and a Foley error to go up 2-0.

In the bottom of the 2nd, Foley struck for 5 runs when they loaded the bases with no outs and Wyatt Ziwicki was hit by a pitch to force in a run.  Lane Olson then singled to tie the game at 2-2 and a single and error by Drew Beier made it 4-2 and then a ground out got the 5th run of the inning home as Foley led 5-2 after 2.

Nisswa tied things up in the top of the 3rd when both Nate DeChaine and Jeremiah Piepkorn singled, followed by a 3-run blast from Sam Peterson to make it 5-5.

But the Lumberjacks put up another 5 runs in the bottom of the 3rd on 1-out singles from Mitch Keeler and Ean Von Wald, then Joe Ziwicki connected for a 3-run shot and Foley was up 8-5.  After Lane Olson was hit by a pitch, Drew Beier drilled a 2-run Homer of his own to make it 10-5 after 3.

After a scoreless 4th, Sam Peterson connected for his 2nd Homer of the game in the 5th, a solo shot, to make it 10-6. Foley got that run back in their half of the 5th on a lead-off double from Joe Ziwicki and a 1-out rbi single by Drew Beier to make it 11-6 after 5 innings.

In the top of the 7th, it was Sam Peterson again as he cracked another solo Homer to make it 11-7.

In the top of the 8th, Nisswa crept closer, getting an rbi double from Matt Casperson and a Foley error to score 2 and make it 11-9.

In the bottom of the 8th, Foley closed out the scoring with a 3-run inning as walks to Noah Winkelman and Dan Marod started the inning. A 1-out walk to Mitch Keeler loaded the bases, then a 2-out rbi single by Lucas Olson made it 12-9.  Joe Ziwicki then capped his big day with a 2-run single to make it 14-9 after 8 innings.

Nisswa got a baserunner on to start the 9th, but  a fly out to right and a game-ending double play finished off the Foley 14-9 victory.
